The main power feed to the fusebox had that green corrosion inside the connector which you could see only once the thing had fractured and come apart, it looked OK on the outside. Obviously this was creating the resistance & generating the heat. I got the car going to get it moved indoors and sort a proper repair when I can source a new fusebox chassis. The heat had cracked the plastic and distorted the rivetted terminal so it'll never be a good connection again. What a relief the damage hadn't got further into the wiring.
