The problem is in the wiring harness at the ventilation fan itself underneath the windshield cowl. The negative wire as it goes to the plastic wiring harness is fried. The wires as they come out of the harness and go to the fan itself look fine. The wiring harness is the part that attaches to the fan housing/car body with one screw and is white colored. That part, along with the black plastic harness that plugs into it containing the wires that come from the engine bay is melted and awful looking. With the ACC on, I wiggled the negative wire and the fan came on and the wire got very hot in my hand immediately. I could hear it sizzle too. The wire is exposed and corroded looking. I must have been smelling the plastic burning, but I'm surprised that the fuse didn't trip.
What could have caused this? A faulty fan speed controller (or did I waste my money replacing that part?) I'm afraid that it will happen again. The fan sounds fine and blows strong.
Since the purpose of this harness, in an ACC equipped vehicle, seems only to connect two wires together, can I bypass this part and simply connect the two wires from the engine bay to the two wires from the fan? That would save me a lot of trouble. I don't want to make it unsafe though, if this plastic connector piece serves any other purpose.
Thanks for any suggestions.
David
