All - Thanks for previous advice!! Once again I am posting on this same issue and have visited two indy Saab mechanics. My 97’ 900S 85K has had cold start (<25° F) issues, i.e. will turn over but won’t catch to puttering out. It is doubly problematic because it is intermittent. So here is exactly what happens:
- Battery Great- turns-over engine fine
- Initially nothing will catch and engine will not even fire
- After a period of time trying to start the engine it will “put-put” and die
- When its close to starting it will turn-over run at approx. 800RPM for 2-5 seconds then die.
- When it is really close to starting it will do the 800RPM thing for 2-5 seconds then jump b/t 1300 and 800 RPM, like it can’t find its idle
- If I ever give it gas anywhere in this process it will immediately die
- Then once I do get it going for more than a minute, if you give it a little gas it will struggle for a few seconds then run fine
- After that and in weather >30°F it runs great.

I have dropped more than a few dozen Franklins trying myself, and the mechanics to diagnose this. This is what we have done so far.
- Replaced fuel filter and pump (not cheap either)
- Replaced all plugs, distrib. cap/wire set
- Checked for proper power levels to fuel pump
- Tech II computer can’t identify any issues in system
- **When we sprayed a fuel stimulant into a vacuum hose it would crank over and start great – meaning it is having issues either getting the fuel (or proper air/fuel mixture) to the engine at start and after the start high-idle drops.

Why can’t this be easy? Dean and another suggested to clean the TB and/or IAC, I have told my mechanics this and they seem to think that is not where the problem is. Next steps, diagnosis suggestions, please advise.

Nick
