I don't know who told MJM that the "wedge" effect was an myth, but they were wrong. It is most definately real.
All the test reports I have seen say that on loose gravel, loose snow, and similar surfaces a locked brake will stop faster than an ABS controlled one. As my first post said, you will not have any steer control with a locked brake. For this reason ABS may be more desirable than a locked wheel, but the stopping distance of the locked wheel on those types of surfaces will most definately be shorter.
So far my post contains what could be considered opinion only. For those who want more, I refer them to SAE-1999-01-1287 where the authors found an average of 27% shorter stopping distances on loose gravel with a locked wheel as opposed to ABS.
A similar paper SAE-986041 finds "The braking performance of nine high-production passenger vehicles was evaluated in seventeen stopping situations. These situations were comprised of various road surfaces, driver steering actions, and vehicle speeds. Testing was performed with lightly and heavily laden vehicles, with the ABS active and disabled, and used two brake pedal application techniques. The selected vehicles included at least one ABS from eight current ABS manufacturers.
This study found that for most stopping maneuvers on most surfaces, ABS-assisted full pedal brake application stops were shorter than those made with the ABS disabled. Additionally, vehicular stability during these maneuvers was almost always superior with the assistance of ABS. The one systematic exception was on loose gravel where stopping distances increased by an average of 27.2 percent overall."
SAE-986054 states that ABS prooved "inefficient for gravel- and snow-covered roads where locked wheels can produce much higher deceleration rates."
There are many more similar studies, and every one that I have read has had similar results. If the laws of physics change anytime soon I will repost.
