Rich is totally right here. As stubborn as I am, I used to hate ABS, and felt that threshold braking was the only way to go. A ABS engineer friend of mine pointed out that you can still use threshold braking with ABS. (up to ~10% slip) When it kicks in, you were about to skid anyway. I guess this proved that I wasn't as good at threshold braking as I thought, or the ABS would not have kicked in.
Unfortunately you can not get the wedge or plow effect braking that can shorten stop distances in snow and gravel with ABS no matter what you do. This is a tradeoff that I deem OK since I can retain steering control in almost any braking manuever. Some people would prefer the shorter stopping distances though. I think that is what the original post was alluding to, but I do not know for sure.
