There is a lot of truth to that motto. Back in '71 when I was looking for a new car I test drove a Toyota wagon, a Datsun, Opel GT, Ford Pinto, and (Motor Trend car of the year) Chevy Vega. The Vega didn't even have a glovebox lid as I recall. Every one of those cars had something about it that immediately turned me off. A friend of mine suggested that I test drive a Saab. "You've gotta be nuts!" I said. "They sound like a trail bike and look like a horseshoe crab without a tail." "They belch smoke and always have an oil streak down the back fender below the gas cap (that is generally an oily rag)."
Then he told me they had a new model, the 99. So I took a chance and tested it. I was immediately impressed. Imagine in 1971 having an electronic fuel injected engine, FWD, four-wheel disk brakes, free-wheeling (the last year for it), fold-down rear seat, forced-air rear window defroster, roll-cage construction, and lots of room for such a small car! You bet I bought it! Paid $3200 for the dearler's demo car and drove it for 24 years! During those those years it sold lots of other Saabs to people who rode in it and the select few that I let drive it.
People don't like things they don't understand. The hardest thing about selling a Saab to the typical American is getting them to test drive it. Like their motto says, if you can get them to do that, they usually buy it.
