I had one of the early Saab turbos, a 1979.
IMO, rumours of the deaths of Saabs due to turbo failure are badly overstated. As the other posters have indicated, these failures you hear about have to be failures on somebody else's turbos*.
It was never the turbo itself that was the problem with Saab. It was the way the rest of the engine took to the excess heat the turbo gave off. For example, I could not keep exhaust manifolds/gaskets. They cracked. I spent $80 on the turbo itself all the time I had it: on a de-coking job and balance which probably wasn't even required.
As other posters have gone to some length to point out, heat dissipation/transfer is no longer a problem with Saab turbos. The technology is sound and always has been. No worries.
In between the present '99 Saab and the '79 Saab, I had a Mitsubishi turbo and it was the same. No worries; no problems. Surprising power; great gas mileage if I wasn't planting the pedal all the time.
[*Having said that, there was a simple procedure consciencious drivers took to prevent turbo damage. Failures happened among hot drivers who neglected to allow the engine to run on and thence, the turbo to cool off after a workout.]
