I agree with Andrew that shifting in and out of neutral will increase wear on the actuators (friction clutches or bands) in the auto transmission.
My experience is based on an (unsuccessful) rebuild of a Borg Warner 35 tranny in a 99 quite a while ago. On disassembly I found that one of the multiplate clutches was down to the bare metal with asbestos sludge all over the place. I believe these actuators are designed for an average 100K mile life at a reasonable cost, assuming say (just an example) 50,000 shifts from neutral to drive and 1,000,000 shifts from first to second gear, etc.
Gentle driving can prolong the life of these parts which wear a tiny bit each time they are actuated. Depending on how conservative the design of the neutral clutch is, shifting to drive 10 times more often than necessary may or may not exceed the life expectancy of the friction material.
So I would recommend using your parking brake instead at lights. It doesn't wear if you apply it when stationary, well maybe the cable wears. I do this on my 5-speed to rest my leg (try rush hour in NYC) and also to not roll into the car in front of me when I space out imagining winding country roads. You can also discover how embarrassing it is when you try to take off at the green with the rear wheels locked ...
