99 9-3 SE clutch trouble

This leased car only has 22,196 miles. Yesterday, pulling onto a parkway, shifting from 1st to 2nd, when I engaged the clutch, the pedal tension loosened up significantly, and when i accelerated, it felt like the clutch was 1/2 engaged...still going forward in 2nd I think, but not as much power. I then put the gear in neutral, and then couldn't shift again. The clutch wouldn't engage. Pedal still felt loose, at about 1/2 the normal tension.
I've read of similar problems with this model and how some have gotten it repaired under the Saab warranty. The dealer is telling me the clutch needs to be replaced and that "whoever was driving it didn't know what they were doing", meaning ME of course.
All I've ever driven is manual transmissions..since 1984! NO clutch has ever gone bad on me -- i know how the drive a manual!
Any suggestions on how I might find out and proved if this is indeed a documentable problem with this model Saab? I really don't think I should pay $1200 to fix a clutch on a 2 year old car.
Thanks
