Chip,
You describe 2 contradictory problems, almost never seen at the same time:
1. Clutch was slipping when in second gear
- Usually due to wear, either naturally due to long usage or due
to poor shifting technique
- Possible contamination by motor oil or hydraulic fluid
- Possible weak or broken pressure plate springs
- Linkage needs adjustment (don't think it applies to Saab)
The mechanic says the clutch plate is worn, not contaminated by oil
2. Once in neutral you couldn't get back into gear, clutch would not
release
- Usually due to hydraulic problems with master/slave cylinder or hose
- Possible rusted or rough splines on tranny input shaft so clutch
plate sticks
- Possible weak or broken pressure plate springs so pressure plate is
non-parallel to flywheel
The mechanic did not comment on the pressure plate or splines
Assuming that there is only one defect (usually the case) the only possible cause of both problems is the pressure plate with several weak or broken springs. The springs may have broken over time. When you say the "pedal tension loosened up significantly" the only cause other than hydraulics would be springs letting go.
When the mechanic claims that the clutch plate is worn, fine, he knows why the clutch slips. But how can he explain the inability to shift into gear? The worn plate seems to be a symptom, not the cause.
Mitch
