Cameron,
When I was shopping for a convertible, I was told by a Saab saleswoman that the frame on the Saab is titanium and designed to handle a rollover. Granted this is information coming from a salesperson. However, when I called my insurance company(USAA) to get quotes. The BMW 325 convertible was about $520 more a year than the Saab and the Volvo was about $200 more a year.
I took delivery of my Saab 9-3SE convertible at the end of June. I feel very safe in the car. It feels very solid. The car's center of gravity seems very low making it difficult to roll over. It is also a very responsive car to help you avoid accidents. I found the Volvo to be more of a luxury car and lack the agility that the Saab and BMW have. As I requested, my car has Pirelli P6000 sport veloce tires which put a good amount of rubber on the road and have a good grip.
Living in California, especially Los Angeles, there are auto accidents every day. When I listen to news casts, I don't hear much about convertibles rolling over. Most of the rollover situations seem to be due to drivers going at excessive speeds, hitting barriers, colliding with large trucks, or going off into the median where the large drain ditches cause the vehicle to topple.
Another issue to consider is how well maintained are some of these cars? Do driver's check their car's tire pressure at least once a month. Are they looking at the condition of their tires. One of the many things I like about the Saab is that it will let you know if a brake light is out. California only has smog inspections. This is very foolish. I see so many cars where their have no brakes lights or maybe just one bulb much less tires that have a good tread.
