Saab uses 'Saab Anti-freeze' which is a standard ethylene glycol based anti-freeze, not the newer GM/Texaco Dex-Cool with its better heat transfer, water pump friendly, better corrosion resistance package.
However I have changed both my 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider and 1998 Saab 900SET over to Texaco/Havoline Dex-Cool. I drained the conventional anti-freeze and refilled the system with distilled water, then ran the engine for several minutes until it reached normal operating temperature. Then I waited a bit for the engine to cool and drained the enigine and refilled with more distilled water. I repeated this for a total of 3 complete distilled water flushes. Then I drained the engine one last time, added 4-5 quarts of Havoline Dex-Cool and adjusted for a 50-50 Dex-Cool/distilled water mix. A very time consuming change over.
Both vehicles are fine. No leaks, no problems. The Alfa runs a few degrees cooler than before (it tended to try to overheat), the Saab just sits at mid gauge. Of course I will probably never get 100,000 miles out of the Dex-Cool. If I lose a hose or water pump I will just use a freah Dex-Cool fill. But I figure I can get a good 30,000-50,000 miles between problems.
