Hi gang,

We took the new SE convertible up to Las Vegas for its first real highway trip. Reading 780 miles on the odometer, mostly acquired from city driving in Los Angeles. We left on Sunday afternoon around 2pm with the top up because the inland temperatures would be in the 90's. Traffic was moving around 25 mph as we left the 101 and moved onto the 10 East. I was really curious to see what SID would have to say regarding the fuel milage. The best I have been able to obtain with city and a little highway driving was about 17.2 mpg(I have an automatic). As traffic cleared on the 10 and we got on the 15 North the milage started to go up. First, it was about 21.4. Then an hour later, it rose to 23.5.

Now keep in mind, we were running the automatic climate control set at 78 degrees. The outside temperature was 95 degrees and climbed up to 115 degrees when we went through the Mojave desert and more specifically Death Valley. I was also going at a pretty good speed. On average, we were doing about 70mpg. However, at one point I decided to really open up the car. We got to 110mpg. This car is wonderful. The faster I went, the better it felt. Don't worry, we didn't stay at 110 mpg for too long. I had also given the car a full check before leaving including checking the tire pressure in my Pirelli P6000 Sport Veloces which are rated for high speed driving. SID was saying the the mpg was now up to 26.5. The temperature gauge just stayed in the middle even when we went through Death Valley. The air conditioning worked great. Anyone who may think that Saab's are only great in winter, I can honestly say that my 9-3SE does great in the hot weather too. Arriving in Las Vegas, the temperature was 109 degrees at 6:30pm. By the time we arrived at our hotel which was about 8 miles north of Las Vegas proper, SID was saying the mpg was at 27.2. The temperature outside did cool off late that evening to 92 degrees. Dry heat or not, I was glad to be in air conditioning.

Interesting to note that when I filled up the gas tank the next morning, Mobil high test was only $1.49 per gallon with an octane rating of 92. The cheapest I have ever paid in LA has been $1.60 for high test with an octane rating of 91. Nevada is a bit too far to go for gas on a weekly basis, but it was a very pleasant surprise for this trip.

The odometer is now at 1406 miles. I plan to have the oil changed and replaced with Mobil 1, 5W-30. My next trip is up to San Rafael(10 miles North of San Francisco) in a little over a week. It should be a cooler drive and the A/C won't have to be running all the time.

Happy Saabing!
