For the reasons given. There are contaminents in the air, whether you can see 'em or not.
I use a two step process at least annually, where [A] the polish takes off the old wax, or what's left of it, and any paint-contaminating goop like sap and bugs and tar. If the polish doesn't take those things off, then something else is needed before you [B] apply the wax. Also, before you wax you should do the annual touch-up paint thing.
I use a mom 'n pop wash-wax-polish-afterspray combo which the anal Porsche concours guy that sells it to me privately says is the heaviest application of carnuba on the market today. All his products are geared to maintaining the those little carnubas as healthy as happy as carnubas can be.
I daresay I run one of the shiniest wet-look black cars in town when it's done semi-anually. It's so shiny, it's almost embarrasing....and no swirl either if it's done right. It takes a half day but if you have the music on in the garage, and are well-fed and have lots to drink, the shower and the trip to the ice cream parlor afterward with the right tunes is, for me, one of life's little joys.
