Funny, now that other manufacturers are starting to embrace the 4-door hatch design, Saab is evidently, at least initially, eliminating the 4-door hatch from the New Generation 9-3 line and replacing it with a wagon.
If the various spy pics we've seen are anywhere close to the finished product, the NG 9-3 may be just another generic looking import 4-door sedan. I'm sure it will be a nice car, but that Saab-like silhouette will be gone from the 4-door model. Much of Saab's styling individuality comes from the hatch silhouette. I sssume the 3-door hatch model will at least retain some Saab styling cues. But who knows if they'll even offer that version in the USA, since the coupe is already dropped for 2002. Come the 2003 model year, there may be a number of defectors from Saab to the Lexus ranks. Whether you consider the Sport-Cross a copy-cat or not, the Lexus IS300 is a nice ride. A pity the 5-speed is not available in the Sport Cross though. Still, for a 4-door hatch, I'd certainly choose a 2002 9-3SE over the Sport Cross. Get one before they're gone.
