I'd love to get the benefit of your thoughts and experience. My wife and I live in Seattle. We ski a lot, so want a car that performs well in snow. I care a lot about performance; my wife wants a car that is reliable, a distinct step up in feel and lux from our Jetta, and has enough of a back seat for an infant car seat. We are considering the A4 1.8T ('02) and the 9.3 ('02) and 9.5 ('01...there are deals to be had). We've always driven sticks, but would consider an A/T.
The audi salesman (who knows we are looking at Saabs) emphasizes the "solidity," (winding up and slamming the door, it closes quietly and solidly), engineering, fit and finish, and resale....in his opinion, it ain't even close. The only rejoinder of the saab guy is to say "the Audi is basically a Passat that costs a lot more."
I've driven both once. My impressions (correct me if I'm wrong here): Seems the audi handling is superior to either: responsive and tight, yet a bit more "damp" on crappy road (esp. compared to the 93). The 9.3 seems quicker than the audi (anyone know the 0-60 times for these cars?), the 9.5 about the same as the A4. All these cars are expensive to fix, and all seem to have spotty histories re repairs. I don't know which is likely to be more reliable. My pet peeves with the cars is that the Audi isn't avail. in leather, and (don't laugh) the blinkers on the Saabs sound loud and cheap.
I assume the A4 will be better in the snow, but I've also been told that a good F/W drive car with good snow tires is very close.
Any thoughts? Thanks.
