Notice the next time you take it out on the highway on a cold morning before the trans has heated up. The engine revs will stay high because the torque converter is slipping while the trans fluid heats up. Once temperature has been reached (after a couple of miles, depending on ambient temperature) then the torque converter will lock-up. It will definitely feel like a shift and the engine revs will drop, maybe as much as 500-700rpm (just a guess based on past experience).
Still don't believe me? Then put the gear selector in third instead of in drive and cruise around at a steady speed. If you're going at a fast enough speed (how about 50-55mph) for long enough time (maybe a few minutes), then your toque converter will lock-up in third also.
So, in you're FOUR speed automatic transmission you could possibly feel "shifts" from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to lock-up, 3rd to 4th, and 4th to lock-up (although it's very unusual to ge a lock-up in third if the gear selector is kept in the drive position.
