I just bought a 96 900SEt and had the same head-scratching moment, "5-speeds?" Then I had the thought that it was perhaps a TC-lockup. Now you've confirmed it. The joys of a large collective knowledge-base.
I remember that my c900's manual specifically mentioned SAAB's torque-multiplying 3-speed tranny, and it always drove somewhat like a speedboat where the engine would accelerate and the then the car would come-up on-plane afterwards, so to speak. If I remember right, the c900's had a 2300rpm-plus TC stall-speed; which is enormous. It also meant that in mountainous terrain there was a lot of waste-heat generated by the torque-converter due to the torque-slippage at load.
Just like with my M-B 240-diesel, I find that for around town driving, it's smoother to just leave the trans in "3rd", rather than "Drive". The revs stay a little higher and it doesn't hunt gears in traffic.
Now, I just have to get the shifter-cable fine-adjusted. It's off the detents a hair and every once in a while the "Park" safety interlock doesn't engage-fully and I have to shift to "N" to start the car.
