The bolts to hold the housing on, if slightly loosened, will allow the housing to fall off. Happened to me right after I changed a broken headlight lens. I caught it in time, retightened the mounting screws & all is well so far. Good luck - sounds like they weren't tightened enough at the factory. Or an errant would-be thief tried loosening them & didn't finish the job.
