1) Is the DI any better or do you still recommend carrying an extra on in the trunk at all times?
Going on 66K miles on my 99' 93SE and have never had a hiccop with my DI. In fact, it's not a regular topic of conversation on the 9-3 board.
2) Did the so called 1,100 changes made for the 9-3 increase reliability?
The 9-3 received very good reliablitity ratings from a recent British survey (sorry . . . I don't have a link) and also got good marks by consumer reports.
3) I would be purchasing my first Saab automatic, who makes them and do they last?
All 9-3 auto transmissions are made by Asian Warner. This same manufacturer makes transmissions for Toyota and Lexus. Very reliable.
4) I know that Saabs aren't perfect, so what can I expect to go wrong with a car with 30,000miles on it.
You shouldn't expect anything to go wrong. In my search for a good used Saab, in addition to standard used car quesitons, I would ask the following;
-are the wheels true (especially an issue with 16" wheels)?
-does the car emit blue smoke on startup?
-Does the car idle smoothly while stopped in gear (potentially a sign of neglect)?
I recently found two out of the three "problems" in a recent 2000 9-5 wagon prospect (bigger family, I need a bigger car).
Hope this helps,
-mark
