Viggen handling pretty much comes out of what you reference it to. An e46 3 series tracks better and feels less top-heavy. It's also rear-wheel drive which allows throttle steering and generally better response to input and no torque steer/tramming.

The Viggen is a whole different beast, ripe with handling issues for an experienced RWD driver to overcome. In stock form the tramming is pretty bad, the car leans around corners and loses bite pretty unpredictably. I think the Viggen has a very soft suspension setup (others say it's already stiff, but as the former owner of 2 Miatas, I think the Viggen could use some tightening up) as I get lots of dive and pitch on and off the throttle. That said, I think sopm of those "shortcomings" part of the fun...

If I'm going on a ride with lots of tight corners and low-speed twisties I take my '02 Protege5, which I feel handles a lot tighter and crisper than my '01 Viggen Convertible. If I'm hitting the highway, I use the Viggen for great creature comfort and power. For me, the Viggen is the luxury machine. In handling it really can't come near my Miatas, but that's really apples to oranges anyway. A 3 series and a Viggen are not sports cars, they are near luxury/luxury sports sedans, and as such they sacrifice things to make advances in others.

The Viggen over 3 series selling points for me were the price difference (used convertibles), the turbo (love that <SNAP>) and the fact that Saabs are not seen at every street corner...much less a Viggen.
