We're on our 3rd Saab having traded in a 99 9-3 SE for a 93SS Arc. My wife is the primary Saab driver and I drive a 2002 Subaru WRX Sport Wagon.
Overall, I will say that Saab could do a lot worse than using the Impreza/WRX as the underside for the 9-2.
Pluses -
Handling, power*, reliability are superior to the Saabs in my experience. The 99 was in the shop for many warranty repairs. The Arc is dying at stop signs.
the Subie -
1. 1st gear syncro went at 40K mi. This seems to be common. I believe there is a new transmission on it's way. I double clutch if I need to go into 1st when moving.
2. Power* lacking below 3K rpm. Added a reprogrammed ECU that raises HP from 227 to about 260. More torque below 3K. Now it's really a beast. There have been lots of power complaints about the 2.0 motor coupled with an automatic. I believe they are moving to the 2.5 which offers more torque.
As for this being 'less of a Saab' because it's built in Japan, that may somehow be true. It's hard to tell what's right in this global economy. Volvos by Ford, Alfa's by GM, Mini's by BMW, Dodges by Mercedes.
Saabs have a history of using outsourced parts. I believe both the 3 cyl, 2 strokes and later the V4's were not Saab designs. Saab didn't make it's own engine until the 99 and it was a 'piece' as I remember (correct me if I'm wrong). The ARC transmission was built in Japan.
