Similar scenario in some ways with the exception that my local dealer has fixed all my woes after much persistence.
I bought a 99 CPO with 36K miles from the Saab Exchange in Chicago. The CPO process was a joke (See Link for that Rant) -- Even more recently found out that the tires on the car are 5 years old. Doesn't surprise me. Anyway lucky for me, despite the horrid "CPO" condition of the car the Saab Exchange replaced 2 bent rims and did my full brake job (I would have sued otherwise). Bent rims should NOT be part of the CPO buying experience IMHO. They should cover the brake job as well. Saab USA was of no help here -- they have zero control over the dealers -- you have to get tough with the dealer yourself -- Not fun.
All that said I got everything in my rant fixed and put some of my own money and sweat and enregy in getting the car perfect -- which it now is. This meant 4 trips to my local dealer to get things right. They (Sewell) are a great dealer, but sometimes they don't always get it right and as Jeff in ATL points out this BB is key to showing them how to fix something right sometimes -- that has been key for me -- especially that "clunk" that your getting and I had.
So -- hang in there. I used to be an Audi guy until my last one -- an allroad -- service was so bad here in Dallas I will never buy another Audi here for sure. I gave it 7 trips to the shop in one year to finally bag the car...So I can understand how it can spoil the ownership experience. Right now my persitence to get the Viggen right has paid off. I wish the Indys could do warranty work!!
Keep us posted.
