I won't venture to answer all the questions as I am new to Saab myself but I do know the following:
-Before I purchased my Saab the previous owner took the car to the dealership for the 45K service. I have the service records proving it was done. Nothing was found.
-My alternator blew about 3 weeks after I got the car. Took it to my dealer who found: 1) bad pulleys and cracked and worn out serpentine belt 2) oil leak from some gasket.
I asked: How did the previous dealer not catch these? The response: I don't know but I can show you the car is in fact leaking oil...etc (he thought I was doubting his sincerity and began getting defensive).
So what's the recourse? None really - I'd still have to pay extra $$$ to get these items fixed had they been caught at the 45K service. The lesson I think is that dealers (some of them at least) skimp out on the "scheduled" service charging you full price but doing the bare essentials...if that.
I'm coming from Acura and the maintenance costs can be high there too...but the dealer was very very honest.
