Good morning.

Since I had the day off yesterday, I took my 2001 9-3SE with 34,500 miles in to the dealer for an oil change and also to check my brakes, which have been squealing a little bit for the past week. After about an hour, the service advisor told me that I only had 5% of my brake pads left and that I needed new rotors because they were warped and couldn't be machined down. Total cost would be about $570 (ouch) for new brakes and rotors.

At 30k miles I had the 30K service completed by the dealer. They are supposed to inspect brake pads in this service. However, nothing was told to me. I also took my car in at about 32k miles to have a wheel vibration looked at. I didn't hear anything that time either. When I told the service advisor this, him and his boss agreed that someone should have said something to me. They then proceeded to tell me that maybe they could machine the rotors down (at no charge) and just change the pads for $210. They also told me that they are surprised that I got this many miles out of these pads as people usually need them changed every 15k-20k. Afterwards, I took my car to an independent mechanic and they said that the rotors were beyond being machined and that they would need replacing (pads and rotors for $500). So here are my questions:
1. What would you do in this situation?
2. Do I have any recourse with the dealer?
3. Why does Saab put brakes on their cars that are only supposed to last 15k-20k miles?

I feel like if they would have checked my brakes at the 30k service then I would have just had to replace the pads and I could have done it at an independent of my choice for less $$.

I would appreciate any advice you could offer. Thanks.
