The M1 5W40 is Mobil Delvac 1, packaged for gas engine use. Delvac 1 is sold in gallon bottle only, and otherwise expensive and hard to find. Delvac 1 is a full synthetic heavy duty over the the road truck diesel engine oil. It has a very robust anti wear and friction reducing package. It is designed for the conditions and heavy loads of high compression turbo charged diesels. I found that it ran very well in my 95SET and my MPGs increased compared to M1 10W30.
It has the latest gas engine specs as many alternative. But with the newer engines from Saab, only the M1 0W40 will meet the letter of the law in the owner's manual requirements. But that does not mean that the 5W40 would not do as well from a wear and deposit point of view. It might even be better. Doing many engine manufacturer's oil spec qualifications is very expensive. Not having those does not mean that a not spec'd oil is neccessarily not up to the task.
M1 0W40 is the safe bet for those who need go 'by the book'.
Otherwise, Delvac 1 5W40 AKA 'M1 truck and suv', has a completely different development history than the other M1 products. It looks different too. The Delvac 1 oil is quite clear and the other M1 oils are very dark right out of the bottle. The darkness in those oils has been attributed to the moly based additives. There are other issues too, such as move from the higher zinc based chemicals in engine oils.
