Due to my days driving in New England and upstate New York and my knowledge of snow tread designs and optimal wheel size, the larger the diameter of the rim and the narrower the tire, the larger the contact patch will be for the deep asymetrical tread and the better the handling (barking and steering)will be. Hence forget about what the rim-hugging pussies at Tire Rack tell you, because winter is not the time to downsize your rims, but only the time to narrow your tire width.

For this very reason, nearly every SUV on the road has OEM tires w/o sufficient tread and narrowness of tire-width to outpeform my SAAB. Add to this the generally mushy brake pedal and over boosted steering and higher centers of gravity in most SUVs coupled with driver inexperience and is it any wonder that these vehicles populate the center median on their roofs far more than SAABs during a snow event on a thruway.

My SAAB blew past Durangos and Explores and Yukons because it was driven by someone who learned how to drive on frozed lakes in New England and because I know that the easiest way to slow down is steer into the deeper snow rather than jack on the brakes and hope to control a skid by over correcting in 2 tom behemoth with poor handling characteristics.

Its all about the contact patch with the snow the tread pattern. Show me a SUV driver who even knows what a snow tire is let alone what the difference is between 4 wheel drive low gear and four wheel drive high.
Think a Yukon can manuever on dry pavement better than a SAAB? Come on, these things are nothing more than unresponsive VW buses which like to roll over into the median during any crash avoidance manuever. Take an exit ramp at 60 in the Jeep Wrangler and watch it roll. Try to swerve to avoid hitting a deer in a Suburban and watch it roll. These trucks American are so fond of are simply poor handling coffins. Add to the fact that the moms who drive these things are used to driving Camrys and Accords, and you begin to get the picture. Would you drive an 18 wheeler without any training? Yet any pinhead can walk into a dealer and buy a Suburban and Excursion and tow a trailer without so much as driving lesson. The SAAB is a superior vehicle to 95% of SUVs out there. Sure I admit a Hummer driven by someone who knows how to drive is better in the snow but how many of those do you see on the highway? Only morons in Florida and Southern California drive these things.
