The principal cause looks to be oil change intervals that are too long for driving conditions, compounded by inadequate oil and a PCV system that under some conditions leaves too many contaminants in the crankcase.
Perhaps SAAB (and dealers) brought this on themselves by making the recommended oil change interval too long, and/or not emphasizing to owners that most use falls in the 'severe service' category that requires more frequent changes.
And some owners and dealers (mine) use any old oil, which turbos will cook into sludge.
Minimal Avoidance Strategy:
Use a fully synthetic oil and change at <5000mile intervals. If all your driving is urban, I personally would change at 4000 or less. Oil used should carry an A3 rating and be a 'true' synthetic. This includes M1 0w40 or 5w40, AMSOIL, Lubrimoly, Pentosin, and one or two Castrol Syntecs made in Europe (most are not, and are not true synthetics). Document all changes thoroughly for the sake of warranty.
In addition (for DIY types like me): monitor the condition of PCV system. Retorque the headbolts to keep water and and coolant out of the oil, and check for sludge while the valve cover is off. Do a cleaning cycle with AutoRX.
