Hi Eiron,
You've more courage than I, to go to 10K miles!
My uneducated feeling is that this is safe as long as the PCV system is in order and other problems at bay. And since you are monitoring with UOA, you should detect any problems before they become too serious. A problem won't persist past one UOA.
My concern is there are enough positive feedbacks (in the sense of amplification, not a 'good outcome') that the oil can go bad quickly. The combo of a bad PCV and a stuck ring (fuel dilution?) can probably cause sludge pretty quickly, and then 10K is a loooong time to have it in the crankcase. And once you have a problem, it might get worse because a fine pick up screen decreases flow.
Not to mention I just _like_ crawling around under the car and getting UOA #s more frequently than every 16K km!!
