On the back side where you see the click marks on tensioner body you can see how the wear is going faster and faster not giving the oil a chance to discolor the pin whereafter it moves out.
In normal engines (the Saab engine we rememeber from the good old days) you can see how the oil has layed different layers of shade on the tensioner but it was usually not more than 3-4 clicks after 100-150K miles.
Now, the wear is happening so fast that many click marks arestill bright and shiny, and the tensioner is maxed out.
The standard for wear was 11mm tensioner extension for the longest time, but now in one of the latest sludge letters the allowed wear is extended to 15mm.
I guess, instead of fixing the problem they just move the allowed parameters so they don't have to fix so many under warranty?
