I don't have any real answers, but catching the problem earlier would have saved a lot of time and trouble. Perhaps the cars ran longer with a rattling chain because it was getting more lubrication on the older cars.
It is easy to understand that if the oil light flickers or the oil pressure measures low, there is a problem, but it took me a while to figure out that you can have good pressure, and some parts of the engine can still be plugged with deposits and have poor lubrication and excessive wear.
My oil was changed often, to try to mitigate the effects of making many short trips summer and winter in start/stop traffic. 10W30 oil was used because that is what the manual called for.
As for the PCV system, there were problems with that on my car years before anything else. I recently replaced the check valve for the second time because it was completely blown, you could see light through it.
