High fuel in oil can be caused by sticking piston rings or general excessive wear. Badly fouled injectors that put fuel onto the piston walls can increase fuel in the oil, but also can create high wear to the rings, cylinder walls and piston ring grooves. With these engines, one would expect to have hard starting if the injectors were that bad. So there are warning signs.
Sticking or coked rings can increase oil consumption and chemical remedies ca n release sticking rings. After that the rings can reseat and oil consumption can sometimes return to normal or neglegable.
Wrong oil and/or neglect can lead to stuck/coked rings.
