Oil is cheap. There is no harm in changing it more frequently. I think these ridiculous oil change intervals we see from car mfgrs these days are the product of marketing only. Yes you can go longer with synthetic...but 10-15K?? Come on!!!
Also, what constitutes "severe conditions??" I would say 99% of drivers drive in "severe conditions".....stop and go traffic, mostly city driving, A/C on, short trips. The manual is not clear what that means.
Saab did the same thing with my 91 9000CD's automatic transmission. The manual said change fluid every 30K, but every 15K in "severe conditions". Well I learned that the hard way....a new transmission at 65K....the dealer I was working with said they saw that a lot. I guess they didn't learn.
