Depends on your style..... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Mon, 18 Jul 2005 10:15:55 In Reply to: 5sp Shift Points...., 97Saab900Turbo, Mon, 18 Jul 2005 05:33:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The RPMs to shift at are load, speed and style dependent. There's a lot of flexibility there for mechanical interpetation. And it's fun to explore the extremes. Did'ja ever try moving away from rest with no throttle and maybe even being delicate enough to shift to second and beyond? Did'ja ever floor it and upshift quickly at redline on a freeway onramp, maybe a little up hill to add load? All the way through 4th gear? Inbetween those two extremes are the heavy throttle low RPM folks, the "short shifters" and the higher RPM folks, the "revvers". Saabs, or any vehicle with high low end torque like a truck, responds well to large throttle openings and shorter shifting. A VTEC Honda I suppose is the other modern extreme.
If it's got an upshift light I do find myself being reminded to upshift. Higher RPMS at light throttle are fuel wasters. The upshift light likes higher gears and bigger throttle openings. Actally the upshift light likes big throttle openings, doesn't care what gear you're in, you don't have to upshift, just push down on the gas 'til it goes out. I call it the "go faster" light.
