First, be sure that a Saab is what you want. Some people are unafected by the sexy Swedish charm; if you don't *feel* a big difference between a Subaru and a Saab, maybe the former is a better choice. I've had '88 and '97 Saabs and an '86 Subaru wagon. For me the Subaru was practical and cheap, period : no aesthetic appeal at all. Of course, this was before the Outback and the WRX. Also, the engine blew up when I was crossing S. Dakota, at only 110k miles. The '88 Saab was a bit more fuss but a *lot* more fun, even without a turbo. It died the "classic" classic (pre-1994) 900 death: a bad tranny. From what I've read on this forum, the auto tranny in the NG 900 SE (and the 9-3) is supposed to be bulletproof, and man is it sweet.

Anyway, if you decide to go with a Saab, there are a few advantages. Saab owners tend to be pretty passionate about their cars, and you'll find this forum *very* helpful and full of useful info. And although 2002 is not a particularly old car, one advantage of going with an older model is that you can see learn what the common problems are and be ready to address them when (or before) they arise. Have a spare Direct Ignition (DI) cassette, replace the serpentine belt, never skimp on quality of oil/gas, etc. If you're attentive to maintenance, don't cut corners, and don't mind shelling out a little more for parts and service, I think you'll find that Saabs are very reliable. My dad hasn't driven anything else since the late '70s, usually gets about 200k miles each.
