1 Mile before an interstate exit I noticed a ticking/rattling/knocking sound from the engine compartment. As I'm getting off the intersate, the sound grows and is really noticable. As I pull into a Park and Ride lot, the car stalls with battery light on. I was able to barely start the vehicle and pull in to a spot. Upon opening the hood, Oil is all along the belt side, and in the wheel well. The oil dip stick was completely dry. A little smoke was coming out of the cone air filter. I added 3 quarts of oil and rstarted. The vehicle stalls as it could barely sustain 800RPM. I added a 4th quart and the vehicle steadies at 1,000RPM, but the loud rattle/knock sound is persistent and appear to be coming from the balancer area, or timing compartment.
A gentlemen stopped by and heard the sound and thought it may be a rod.
Any ideas? Costs? I had it towed to a Swedish Solution -Saab Specialist in Westbrook, ME.
Thanks.
BTW, I did notice oil loss the past 10k miles of 2 quarts/month, but never a drip loss. Oil was collecting on the RH CV boot area, but never dripped, -just conjealed.
