It is no rhyme or reason for water pump failures (50 to 150K miles) but most of them either start to leak (dribble) or start to make noise so that it will alert you.
But some few die more quitely and the pulley slowly gets pulled toward the timing cover from the serpentine belt tension.
Also, some drivers have a higher treshold when it comes to accepting noises so the pump might make noise for quite awhile but not leaking and therefore they keep driving until it has eaten a hole in the cover and the engine start leaking oil.
Changing coolant every two years or 30K miles is a good warranty to keep water pump alive for long since the coolant have a lubricating effect too (not only freeze protection).
