The HVAC knobs getting stiff and breaking is a sign that the inner workings deep in the dash need replacing, $600 ish IIRC. There is a more recent patch for this and I'm curious so I'll ask our super tech Eric Thomas what it is. That's a known issue with manual HVAC controls of the non SE's. The ACC, digital automatic climate control in the SE's is relatively bulletproof by contrast, the opposite of normal intuition.
A stiff clutch could be a cable, but if you replace the cable and it's still stiff that means the clutch is worn. The wear has made the clutch pressure plate use more of the springs and clutch finger travel travel and the more you use up the stiffer it gets. You can nurse a worn clutch for 10-20-50k or more and modern clutches often won't ever slip even when completely worn out.
