Thanks Mike for the information: that unfortunately makes sense as well. Looking around through the other posts it seems the entire heater box would likely need to be replaced to the tune of $750-ish...a little bit more than I can afford to invest at this time, unfortunately.

Also a good thing to know about the clutch, thank you. My '85 900 has had the very same noise for the past year now (less than 10k), which is in part why I've decided to find another car. Sounds like I'd be jumping from one fire to another by going to the '95...yikes.
