Clutch/Can not shift

I have looked through the many posts on this board and I am still not sure what to do...?
1. I can not shift gears when car is on, I tried pulling on the clutch cable it helped a little but is now doing the same thing (not shifting).
2. The cable is not broken. Is this an indication that it needs to be replaced?
Can someone point me to a link for the instructions for replacing the cable?
TIA, Alyssa
