I have a 1996 900S convertable. Actually it's my wife's car. She freakin loves it. It hasnt been a bad car, but not as rock solid reliable as my 1992 Volvo 940. I think the previous answer dealt with the issues you discussed. Further, the 96 is an ODBII car. So, at least in NC it gets inspected that way. Get it inspected in the cold months. That computer is a funky beast and it is less problematic when the temp is colder than 60 degrees.

The 2.3 has been a great engine with a chain. It makes tollerable power and it's reliable. However, the secondary air injector sits under the battery and it is subject to needing replacement every 100,000 or so.

Mine has the CD changer in the trunk. Every year or so it's a good idea to unplug it and spray some contact cleaner in the connectors. Keeps everything working right.

Depending on what you have been driving it's not a real smooth ride. Compared to my Volvo it rides kinda hard, like a sports car should I guess. My Volvo is long and smooth. The SAAB is short and a tad more stiff.

I have had no serious issues in the last three years. I need to retorque my head which will take about an hour. I put a water pump on recently and did the 1998 and later serpentine belt re-route thing with a new tensioner pully just because.

I plan to keep this car for at least five years. It's as good as anything else and the tranny is no problem at all.
