automatic tranny "slip" -- PLEASE HELP!

My wife's '97 900s (4 cyl automatic) has been exhibiting all sorts of odd behavior. One habit that has me concerned is that there is a faint "hesitation" or "slip" when the car starts off from a stop. If one accelerates slowly enough, it's not there, but at anything at or above a normal rate of acceleration, there is a slight "slip," for lack of a better term, in first gear. Many years sgo, my old TR6 lost a first-gear tooth, and the resultant brief loss of forward progress felt much the same. There is no miss in the engine at all; this feels like a mechanical slip (like a bad CV joint maybe even, though they are not at all noisy and don't seem to exhibit any of the usual signs of wear) or a transmission fault.
Any ideas? The car's got ~130k on this orignal transmission. It wouldn't hurt to try a tranny fluid and filter change, would it? I can't even be sure the previous owner did any transmission maintenance, though the fluid appears to be clean.
Many thanks for any thoughts you might provide!
Chris
