Bad AC clutch (or worse) on 2001 Viggen

I have a 2001 Viggen with 43k miles. Right before my exit on the interstate I smelled a burning rubber smell. Thinking, "Some car just slammed on the breaks" I took my exit and heard a grinding sound (sounded like bad bearings) from the hood of my car.
I pulled over and popped the hood. The serpentine belt is intact, the pulleys seam ok. (had them serviced roughly 6000 miles ago). Oil level was fine, and no warning lights were on the dash.
The grinding noise is not constant. At idle it occurs for about 3 secs then goes away for about 8 secs then repeats. If I bump the RPM's to roughly 1300 the noise goes away (However at 2000 rpm I could hear the noise at times).
I nursed the car home for the last 1/2 mile.
I did not notice any problems with the engine or transmission during my gentle trip home. Engine performance was the same, no slippage with the clutch or transmission etc.
Does anyone have any insight on the possible problem?
Thanks
