We don't know and the guesses are many.
Extended oil change intervals (10K miles) and not informing the customer that under severe driving (pretty much all driving except a few) the oil change interval should be no longer than 5K miles.
Changes to the oil pump pick up screen so that no solids whatsoever will pass through, making the screen plug up easily and start a down spiral sequence.
Placing the catalytic converter right under the oil pan so that the oil is running hotter.
Changes to the PCV system compared to older Saab engines.
Changes to pistons to create a low friction engine and by that maybe altering the way the engine is creating vacuum and dealing with crank case ventilation.
Changes to the oil pump so that it seems it has a more difficult time to create good oil pressure.
I may have forgotten some but they are all in here somewhere if you search long and hard.
