It seems to be less and less. Even though no major break downs of engines for quite awhile but I do see a bigger trend of worn/stretched timing chains and guides on the B205/235 engines even though there is really no sludge in there.
I have taken off quite a few valve covers to replace the head bolts and torque the gasket and at the same time checking the timing chain.
Don't know if people finally came to their senses with lowering the oil change intervals or when they got "out of the claws" of the dealers recommendations of 10K and back to normal 5K when the car was out of warranty.
Even though looking good on paper, I also wonder about that semi synt oil that was used and if that was one more nail in the coffin together with all the other possible causes?
It seems like the downward spiral started early in the cars life which is also why the whole engine warranty thing came to life in Sweden, since the insurance companies had to pick up the tab for engine break downs.
Without them raising hell I don't think we would have seen any extended warranty at all.
So the question remains.
Why would suddenly people start to drive in a different manner from about 99 and up compared to what drivers have been doing for decades.
Since that's the official stand point that short trips and cold starts are to blame together with lack of oil changes.
Why did people go through such a change in late 90s????
Was it Global warming that altered their behaviour?
Maybe it was the Crab people?
Ok the last two was a reference to yesterdays South Park episode I watched, which was a really good one. ;O)
