I would like to know the particulars of piston changes. Lightened pistons run hotter. Moving the rings higher makes them hotter. Oil may get roasted there, then further damage can follow, just as boiled linseed oil becomes prone to oxidation and solidifcation. And the first engines to fail were as a class the non-turbo engines with 10.5 CRs. Those pistons may have run hotter than turbo engine pistons during typical operating conditions. The other explaination was that non-turbo owners as a group were less concerned about oil changes than turbo owners.
The oil companies may have seen this problem and quietly changed their products.
