For a while now I've had clunking coming from my passanger side suspension...it would happen over bumps but every now and then, then it increased in frequency and eventuall it would happen when I turn the car on as the engine is firing up. It turned out to be that the bushings holding the subframe were worn and loose. The force of the engine turning over would cause the metal clunk as the subframe torqued and moved against the chassis. You mentioned left front next to firewall...the subframe bushings are located there..
