Well honestly it is you. :) I'm kidding but your reason to go back German doesn't make too much sense.
The reason your car likes higher octane fuel is becuase it is able to run a higher effective compression ration (CR) ie, more boost, becuase octane functions to make the fuel LESS volatile. Higher CR means more power and greater conversion efficiencies.
If you wanted to buy a German car that had similar engine outputs you would also need to run higher octane fuel because to have a similar output the car would have a higher static CR, which would also require higher octane fuel to support correctly...
Actually, a turbo car has more flexibility than a non-turbo car becuase the ECU can vary the effective compression ratio to match the fuel by changing boost levels. One of those high compression German cars can't do that, so when you run cheap fuel in them they only thing they can do is retard timing. In either car you'll get less power with lower octane fuel. The conversion effiency is better at higher CR's (running the correct fuel) so your MPG's should increase to help offset the cost of 93 vs 87.
Or, you could shop for a lower performance car with a lower compression engine that's made to run low grade fuel if that's a priority for you.
What spark plugs are you running in your car? Gapped correctly? Maybe a switch to a hotter spark plug may help when you run the cheap stuff.
