I purchased my first SAAB (97 SET auto) almost 3 years ago with appox. 50K miles on it. I have driven it 25K miles and the car has been very reliable. During this time, I have only needed to change the DIC and the thermostat. I also did the "short belt mod" and replaced the upper idler pully as preventative maintenance. With the help from Saabnet, I was able to do these repairs and all maintenance myself (and I'm a fairly novice DIYer). When I bought the car, I was thinking that it would cost $1000 per year to maintain, but as it turns out, it has not needed to see a mechanic yet thanks to Saabnet(I guess I just jinxed myself).
The SAAB is very fun to drive, has a ton of cargo room, and has nice features for a 10 year old car. I might not be as bulletproof as a Corolla, but it is way more fun.
