The timing chain is what drives the camshafts. The balance chain is what drives the balance shafts. You can do without the balance chain, however, if it were to break, the broken pieces would very likely cause engine damage. That's why it's OK to cut & remove the balance chain. The first thing I would do is to see how badly the timing chain is worn. The timing chain is kept taught by the use of a spring-loaded ratcheting tensioner. It's a simple job to remove the tensioner and measure the amount the tensioner has extended. This gives you a good idea of how much the timing chain has stretched. My son and I just did this to his 1995 900S a few weeks ago. The extension on ours was 11.8 MM, which I consider pretty good for 152,000 mi. You can find detailed instructions at:
